The prices of chicks in local markets increased from 7 to 30 pounds in preparation for the month of Ramadan, which is a sharp and unprecedented rise, as the price of one chick jumped from 7-12 pounds to reach about 29-30 pounds within a few days, which has a negative impact on poultry prices coinciding with the approaching month of Ramadan, according to statements by Abdel Aziz Al-Sayed, Head of the Poultry Wealth Division at the Cairo Chamber of Commerce.
The head of the division attributed the sharp increases to several factors, the most important of which are:
- Production reduction: successive losses incurred by breeders during two previous production cycles, which led many of them to reduce or stop production.
- Increased winter costs: The high cost of heating and veterinary vaccinations, the prices of which have increased significantly during the winter.
- Lack of discipline: The real crisis lies in the absence of fair pricing mechanisms and complete reliance on the uncontrolled supply and demand mechanism.
