The Ministry of Health and Population has warned against excessive consumption of salted fish such as fesikh and herring during the holiday period, stressing that poor or increased consumption may result in a number of serious health risks, most notably high blood pressure and exposure to food poisoning.

The Ministry explained that fesikh and herring contain high levels of salts, which leads to an increased risk of high blood pressure, especially in patients with high blood pressure and those with chronic diseases, which may exacerbate health complications and affect the efficiency of the heart and blood vessels.

She added that one of the most serious potential complications is also botulism, or botulism, which is a bacterial disease that affects the nervous system as a result of poor preservation of salted fish. It may lead to serious symptoms that include double vision, difficulty speaking, and muscle weakness, and its effect may extend to the muscles of the respiratory system in severe cases.

The Ministry stressed the importance of adhering to moderation in eating these foods, and the necessity of verifying their sources and method of preservation to avoid any health risks, stressing that prevention remains the most important means of avoiding food poisoning.

In the event that any suspected symptoms appear, the Ministry called on citizens to immediately go to the nearest hospital to obtain the necessary medical care, including the Mumbai poisoning serum when needed, noting that emergency lines 16474 and 137 have been designated to receive inquiries and medical support.

This comes within the framework of the seasonal awareness campaign implemented by the Ministry of Health and Population in conjunction with the holidays, under the slogan “Eid with Health”, with the aim of promoting safe food behaviors and protecting the health of citizens.
