Company intends dead The independent website for the Messenger service will be permanently closed in April 2026, in a new step to enhance the integration of messaging services within the Facebook platform, with users automatically being transferred to messages through the main platform.
Messenger service
The company explained, in an official statement, that users who try to access Messenger via the website will be directed directly to Facebook messages immediately after stopping the service, while the Messenger application on iOS and Android smartphones will continue to work without any expected changes.
Site users most affected
The decision will have a greater impact on users who rely on the Messenger website through the browser without having an active account on Facebook, as they will have to log in through Facebook to follow and manage their conversations online, which may lead to losing access to conversations for those who do not have an active account on the platform.
Move towards service integration
Closing the site comes as part of a series of steps taken by Meta during the recent period to integrate its various services, as it previously stopped the independent Messenger applications for Windows and Mac devices, in a clear indication of the company’s move towards unifying communication tools within its digital system.
Messenger was launched as an independent application in 2011, before it turned into one of the largest messaging platforms in the world, competing with prominent applications such as WhatsApp, as part of the “Meta” strategy to expand communication services and link them to a unified platform.
