US President Donald Trump said, during an interview with Fox News, that the attack in Venezuela was not directed as a warning to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, but referred to the gangs’ control of Mexico.

Trump added: We are very friendly with her, she is a good woman…but the gangs control Mexico, they are not the ones who run Mexico.

Trump added that Sheinbaum had repeatedly rejected his offers to intervene against the cartels. He said, “I asked her several times, ‘Do you want us to get rid of the cartels?’” adding that something would have to be done with Mexico.

His comments came even though his administration officials had previously praised Mexico for unprecedented cooperation, pointing to a record number of arrests of gang members and successful seizures of fentanyl, according to the New York Times.
