In light of the publications that have recently been circulated on some social media platforms and websites related to the Grand Egyptian Museum, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities would like to clarify a number of facts, in order to inform public opinion of the full picture, and to confirm the Egyptian state’s commitment to managing this global cultural edifice in accordance with the highest international standards.
The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities clarifies the facts regarding what was recently raised about the Grand Egyptian Museum
The Ministry confirms that the Grand Egyptian Museum continues to receive its visitors regularly according to the official working hours in force since its opening to the public on November 4th, without any change, and that the visiting movement is proceeding normally and orderly. Since its opening, the museum has witnessed a remarkable turnout from Egyptian and foreign visitors, which reflects the great interest in this unique cultural project, as the average number of visitors so far has reached 15 thousand visitors per day, which is commensurate with the maximum capacity to accommodate visitors and the density at different visiting times.
In this context, and in the interest of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities to organize the movement of visitors inside the museum in accordance with its capacity, ensure smooth entry and exit, maintain the comfort and safety of visitors, improve the quality of the tourist experience, and preserve its archaeological collections, it was decided, as of the first of this December, to implement the exclusive electronic reservation system for tickets to enter and visit the museum, and to stop selling tickets from direct sales outlets inside the museum.
Reservations are made through the official website of the Grand Egyptian Museum (https://gem.eg), according to specific timelines, and the reservation system is being followed up on a regular basis by the museum administration to ensure its efficiency and regularity of work.
The Ministry confirms that the electronic reservation system operates completely efficiently and smoothly, without detecting any technical malfunctions, and is monitored continuously to ensure the best level of service is provided.
Regarding the prices of entry tickets for Egyptians compared to foreigners, the Ministry explains that this system has been in place for many years in all Egyptian museums and archaeological sites, and comes within the framework of the state’s keenness to ensure that ticket prices for Egyptians are proportional to the income level of citizens, allowing the largest possible segment of citizens to visit museums and archaeological sites and learn about their history and ancient civilization.
As for the observations related to some of the museum’s external floors, the Ministry confirms that these simple observations result from the equipment and decorations that were set up for the museum’s opening event. Work is currently underway to repair it in light of the agreement concluded with the company executing the opening ceremony according to a specific time plan and in successive stages, with full compliance with the approved technical standards, ensuring that it does not affect the movement of visitors or the visitors’ experience, and that all elements are returned to their original condition.
Regarding the issue of rainwater leaking into the lobby of the Grand Egyptian Museum, the Ministry clarifies that the design of the museum lobby came in accordance with an architectural vision based on the presence of openings in the ceiling in an engineering shape that allows continuous lighting and natural ventilation to enter the lobby, which is one of the basic elements in the architectural design of the museum. Therefore, limited amounts of rainwater leaking into the foyer during rainfall is consistent with the design and expected at this time of year.
