Ambassador Tamim Khallaf, spokesman, revealed Ministry of Foreign Affairsannounced the success of the Egyptian state in releasing 3 citizens who had been kidnapped in Mali since last October 22, after continuous efforts that lasted 5 weeks in coordination between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the relevant state agencies, and the official authorities in Mali.

Successful liberation of 3 Egyptians kidnapped in Mali

The Foreign Ministry spokesman said, during television statements, that the area where the kidnapping took place is located outside the capital, Bamako, in an area where armed groups are deployed, stressing that Mali and the African Sahel region in general are witnessing tense security conditions, which prompted the Ministry to issue repeated warnings to the Egyptian community not to leave the capital.

Khallaf explained that the Foreign Minister made direct contacts with his Malian counterpart, demanding protection for the Egyptians and working to release the kidnapped people, while the Egyptian ambassador in Mali was making periodic contacts with the authorities there, and with the families of the kidnapped ones, to ensure that they are informed of all developments.

He pointed out that the release process took place through two parallel tracks: the first was diplomatic through the Egyptian Foreign Ministry and its Malian counterpart, and the second was a security track on the part of the Malian authorities, stressing that coordination between Egyptian and financial institutions was a decisive factor in the success of the process.

The official spokesman confirmed that the three Egyptians are in good health. One of them returned to Cairo a few days ago, while the other two were received yesterday at the Egyptian Embassy in Bamako, and the necessary arrangements are being finalized for their return to the homeland in the coming days.

At the conclusion of his statements, Ambassador Tamer Ramzy renewed his appeal to the Egyptian community in Mali, which numbers between 500 and 1,000 citizens, to commit to staying inside the capital and avoiding traveling to areas witnessing security unrest.
