The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio, called Guterrescalls for support for countries hosting refugees, especially low- and middle-income countries that host nearly three-quarters of refugees in the world.

Calls to support countries hosting refugees

This came in a video speech by Guterres presented during the second meeting of high-level officials to review the progress achieved in the Global Refugee Forum, which began Monday in Geneva, Switzerland, and continues until Wednesday, in partnership between the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the Swiss government.

He pointed out that the first international consensus in the field of migration, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018, still represents a guide for moving forward.

Guterres said: We must increase support for host countries, especially low- and middle-income countries that host nearly three-quarters of the world’s refugees.

He added: We must promote the integration of refugees into society and their self-reliance, as it is a dignified way to unleash their human potential.

Guterres stressed the need to support local economies and reduce dependence on aid, in addition to ensuring that people can safely return to their homes, as one million Syrians did last year.
