The Department of Homeland Security announced American Quarantine and strict precautionary measures were imposed inside an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in south Texas, after two cases of measles were recorded among detainees, according to Reuters.

A quarantine was imposed inside an immigration detention center in Texas after measles cases were recorded

The ministry said, in a statement issued on Monday, that the authorities immediately isolated the infected people and stopped all movements inside the migrant processing center in the city of Dili, noting that all detainees are receiving the necessary medical care, while health teams continue to monitor the situation to prevent the spread of infection.

The statement explained that the Health Services Corps of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Department also isolated everyone suspected of having been in contact with the infected people, as part of urgent precautionary measures to control the spread of the disease within the facility.

These measures come in light of a significant increase in measles cases across the United States, as the state of Texas alone recorded hundreds of infections over the past year, in one of the largest outbreaks of the disease since its official elimination was declared in 2000.

In the same context, a measles outbreak inside the facility led to the cancellation of a scheduled visit by a delegation from the US Congress, as Democratic Representative Joaquin Castro renewed his criticism of what he described as “inhumane” conditions inside the detention center.
