A remote area near Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California was subjected to an avalanche on Tuesday, which led to the loss of ten skiers, while six others remained stranded at the accident site, according to a statement published by the Nevada County Police Office on Facebook.
The statement said that the group consisted of 16 people, including four ski guides and 12 skiers. At least six survived and remained at the collapse site awaiting rescue teams, while the fate of the others remains unknown.
The authorities stated that if the ten skiers died, this accident would be classified as one of the deadliest avalanches in the history of the United States, noting that the Colorado Avalanche Information Center has so far recorded six deaths resulting from avalanches this season, according to what was published by Reuters.
The Sierra Avalanche Center issued a warning before dawn on Tuesday of a “high risk of avalanches” in the area, while emergency and rescue teams continued search operations with the support of local ski resorts, amid expectations of continued snowfall and more avalanches until Wednesday.
California Governor Gavin Newsom was briefed on the incident, confirming on the X website that authorities were “coordinating search and rescue efforts statewide” in cooperation with local emergency teams.
