Sales of the original Nintendo Switch continued to rise despite the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 in mid-2025, which gave it enough momentum to become the most successful device in Nintendo’s history in terms of the number of units sold.

Nintendo recorded sales of 155.37 million Switch units, surpassing the Nintendo DS, which stopped at 154.02 million units, while the Nintendo Game Boy came in third place, with several versions included in one category, such as the Game Boy Color.

On the other hand, Nintendo Switch 2 started off strongly, as the company sold about 6 million units in less than a month, bringing the total to 17.37 million units so far, but it still has a long way to go to catch up with its predecessor.

In terms of game sales, the original Switch continued its clear dominance after its game sales exceeded 1.5 billion copies. For comparison, the Nintendo DS achieved sales of 948.76 million games, while the Nintendo Wii came in third place with 921.85 million games. This number is remarkable, especially since Wii sales amounted to only 101.63 million units, that is, less than sales of Game Boy, which in turn recorded 501.11 million games sold.

Despite this historic achievement for the Nintendo Switch, it did not claim the title of best-selling gaming device ever. This title still belongs to the Sony PlayStation 2, which sold about 160 million units during its long life span from 2000 until its official discontinuation in 2013. The PS2 also tops the list of game sales with a total of 1.54 billion copies.
