YouTube relaunched the Premium Lite subscription in March 2025, and about a year after that, the company announced the addition of new features that enhance the value of this economic plan.
Previously, the subscription only provided viewing of “most videos” without ads, without any additional benefits. Now, YouTube is adding support for background playback and the ability to download “most videos” as well, features that were exclusive to the full subscription.

The company will begin rolling out these updates in the coming weeks in all countries where Premium Lite is available. However, YouTube continues to stress that removing ads does not include all content, but only “most videos,” unlike a full subscription that removes ads comprehensively.
Despite these limitations, Premium Lite remains a less expensive option, and is now even more attractive thanks to two new features. But it should be noted that the benefits apply to most non-musical content, with the exception of Shorts, and ads may appear while searching or browsing within the application.
