Being overweight in a certain decade of life may be more dangerous
The study, published in eClinicalMedicine, was based on an analysis of data from more than 620,000 people within a Swedish research project specializing in obesity and disease development.
The results showed that men who became obese before the age of 30 faced a higher risk of premature death by approximately 80%, while the risk in women increased by about 70% compared to those who maintained a normal weight or gained weight in advanced stages of life.
Tanja Stocks explained that the most prominent result of the study was that obesity at an early age is associated with a clear increase in the risk of death later, due to the effect of excess weight on the body for a longer period.
For her part, researcher Huiwen Li pointed out that people who suffer from obesity in their twenties remain vulnerable for many years to the effects of excess weight on blood vessels, liver, and metabolism.
The study showed that the most serious complications associated with early obesity were Type 2 Diabetes, in addition to high blood pressure and an increased risk of some types of cancer, such as liver cancer in men and uterine cancer in women.
The researchers also pointed out that gaining weight between the ages of 30 and 60 still represents a health risk, but it is less severe compared to obesity that begins at an early age.
The study emphasized the importance of preventing obesity in the early stages of life, as it is an essential step to reduce the possibility of chronic diseases and reduce the risk of early death.
