Despite the large differences in capabilities and market value, the comparison between Al-Ahly and Real Madrid’s season this year reveals an interesting paradox. Both teams entered the season with huge ambitions and strong deals, but the reality on the field was not always with the same expectations.
A volatile season brings together Al-Ahly and Real Madrid
Initially, Al-Ahly strengthened its ranks with a number of important deals, especially in the offensive line and midfield (Zizou, Trezeguet and Mohamed Ali Ben Ramadan)with the aim of maintaining local dominance and competing strongly in Africa and the continent in the Club World Cup. On the other hand, Real Madrid entered the season with huge reinforcements (Kylian Mbappe, accompanied by Vinicius, Rodrigo, Bellingham and Brahim Diaz), as part of a long-term project to maintain European control and return to competing on the continent.
However, in terms of performance, the two teams suffered from clear fluctuations. Al-Ahly, despite its positive results in periods, faced criticism due to the decline in collective performance in some matches, exit from the first round in the Club World Cup and the quarter-finals of the African Champions League, third place in the league championship and farewell to the local cup in the first round at the hands of a second-class team, in addition to crises related to the locker room, problems and finances, which affected technical stability. Despite this, the team remains a strong competitor for the league and still has hope of emerging from the local championship this season. Thanks to his experiences and personality.
On the other hand, Real Madrid was not far from this scenario. The Spanish team, despite having a group of stars, suffered from inconsistent level, especially in some major matches, in addition to the exit from the Champions League in the quarter-finals, the loss of the Spanish Super Cup and the farewell of the local cup in the first round at the hands of a second-class team, in addition to the impact of absences, fatigue and problems in the dressing room. Some tactical problems also appeared, especially in the balance between defense and attack, which cost the team important points, which led to it occupying second place in La Liga. And it came close to losing for the second season in a row.
The most notable point of similarity between the two teams is that the new deals have not yet fully achieved the expected impact. In Al-Ahly, some players did not adapt quickly to the way of playing, while in Real Madrid, some new names needed time to adapt to the pressure of big matches and the team’s requirements.
In terms of personality, the two teams clearly excel. Al-Ahly has a championship mentality, and this is evident in its ability to come back in difficult matches, while Real Madrid is distinguished by the same characteristic at the European level, where it always remains a terrifying opponent regardless of the circumstances.
Tactically, Al-Ahly relies on organization and discipline while relying on quick transitions, while Real Madrid has greater flexibility in its playing style, thanks to the quality of its players and their ability to change the tone of the match at any moment.
In the end, it can be said that both teams are going through an “imperfect” season compared to expectations, but they are still in the competition circle. The real difference may appear in the last meters of the season, where experience and personality play a decisive role, and here specifically Al-Ahly and Real Madrid have a common weapon that may compensate for any technical deficiency or fluctuation in performance.
