In a remarkable development on the ground, an American official said on Wednesday that the United States had begun withdrawing some individuals from its military bases in the Middle East, following a warning from a senior Iranian official that Tehran would target American bases if Washington launched an attack on them.
The American official explained that this step comes as a precautionary measure in light of the escalation of regional tensions, and this coincided with Qatar’s announcement that the operations to withdraw some individuals from Al Udeid Air Base, the largest American base in the region, are taking place in response to the current security conditions.

Three diplomats said that some individuals had been informed to leave the base, noting at the same time that there were no immediate indications of large-scale troop transfers, such as those that preceded the Iranian missile strike last year.
These developments come at a time when Iran is facing the worst internal unrest since the outbreak of the Islamic Revolution in 1979, as protests broke out about two weeks ago against the backdrop of deteriorating economic conditions, before escalating and turning into violent confrontations in recent days.
