Alaa Farouk, Minister of Agriculture, said that the state is implementing a comprehensive plan to expand the agricultural area, combining horizontal and vertical expansion, which contributes to meeting the growing needs for food and supporting agricultural exports.

Alaa Farouk: We aim to raise local wheat production to more than 10.5 million tons

Farouk added, during television statements, that the horizontal expansion includes giant national projects, including the New Delta project with an area of 2.2 million acres, and the Sanabel Sono project with about 450,000 acres, in addition to agricultural expansions in Sinai, which exceed 500,000 acres, and the areas of North Uwaynat and Toshka Extension, which exceed 300,000 acres.

He continued that the total land being reclaimed and developed exceeds 3.5 million acres within the Egypt Future Project, stressing that these projects represent promising opportunities to increase local production and enhance exports.

He stated that the Ministry aims to achieve self-sufficiency in the wheat used in loaves of subsidized bread, as work is underway to raise local wheat production to reach between 10.5 and 11 million tons during the current season.

Alaa Farouk explained that Egypt’s annual needs for wheat amount to about 18.5 million tons, while local production last year amounted to approximately 9.5 million tons, noting that the target during the current year is to receive about 5 million tons of local wheat, compared to the 4 million tons received last year, in coordination with the relevant authorities.

He stressed that these efforts aim to reduce the import gap, not only in wheat, but also in corn and fodder, through integrating the roles of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Egyptian Future Agency, national agencies, and the private sector.
