Mohamed Al-Khashin, President of the Egyptian Fertilizer Merchants and Suppliers Association, said that prices… Fertilizers It witnessed a 35% increase during the recent period, due to price effects in the markets, and not to a lack of production.
Egypt’s production and exports of urea
The head of the Egyptian Fertilizer Merchants and Suppliers Association explained in a special statement to Cairo 24 that Egypt’s production of urea reaches about 6 million tons annually, in addition to one million tons of other nitrogenous materials, pointing out that the local market consumes only about 30% of the total production, while the largest percentage is directed to export.
He pointed out that during the past periods, less than 70% of Egypt’s urea production was exported, compared to usual rates, as a result of what is currently happening related to price changes and not a supply crisis.
The head of the Egyptian Fertilizer Merchants and Suppliers Association confirmed that Egypt is one of the largest fertilizer exporting countries and is keen to preserve the quality of its agricultural products and the stability of the agricultural sector in general.
Al-Khashin expected an increase in Egyptian fertilizer exports to global markets during the coming period, with a noticeable increase in the coming period, supported by a boom in export volume, while continuing to maintain the stability of agricultural production.
Exports of the Egyptian chemical and fertilizer industries sector
The Export Council for Chemical Industries and Fertilizers previously revealed that exports of the chemical and fertilizer industries sector would rise during the year 2025 to about 9.43 billion US dollars, compared to 8.78 billion US dollars in 2024, an increase of about 650 million US dollars, with a growth rate of 7.4%.
Italy came at the top of the importing countries with exports amounting to about $1.284 billion, followed by Türkiye with $1.103 billion, then Brazil with about $652 million.
The list of the largest markets also included the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with an amount of $580.9 million, France with an amount of exports of $479.5 million, Spain with an amount of $471.7 million, Libya with an amount of $298 million, Belgium with an amount of $265.4 million, Morocco with an amount of $251.6 million, and Lebanon with an amount of $228.9 million.
Targeting Egypt’s exports of chemical industries
Engineer Khaled Abu Al-Makarem, Chairman of the Export Council for Chemical Industries and Fertilizers, revealed last March an ambitious plan for the sector that aims to reach the value of exports to $11 billion by the end of 2026.
Alaa Farouk, Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, pointed out in previous statements that Egypt has occupied a distinguished global position in the manufacture and export of mineral fertilizers and plant nutrients, as Egypt is considered among the important countries producing fertilizers, as it comes in first place in the Arab world and fifth in the world among the largest countries producing urea fertilizer, with a quantity reaching more than 7.6 million tons annually.
Global fertilizer prices decline
Globally, fertilizer prices fell significantly yesterday, after Iran announced that the Strait of Hormuz was open, which eased some of the burden on farmers, although they are still facing delays in delivery.
Prices of urea, the most widely used form of nitrogen, fell by about 18% to $640 per ton in New Orleans, down from a peak of $780 earlier last week, according to Bloomberg.
