The events witnessed the presence of Major General Nader Allam, Mayor of Sharm El-Sheikh, and representatives of the relevant directorates, from Agriculture, Health, Social Solidarity, South Sinai Reserves, the Drinking Water and Sanitation Company, the Fisheries Resources Authority, and the National Council for Women, as well as representatives of community development associations, investors, and the sheikhs and tribes of the governorate’s Bedouins.

The discussion session addressed the increasing impacts of climate change on society and mechanisms for confronting them, with a review of the “Green Sharm” project. Participants also discussed the most prominent environmental issues, most notably the impact of climate change on biodiversity in the Red Sea region, the plant and animal changes occurring and their repercussions on environmental life, in addition to the importance of cooperation between local communities to address the effects of climate change, the necessary measures to reduce its negative effects, and the role of government agencies, civil society, the private sector and international donors in confronting the challenges of climate change.

In his speech, the Governor of South Sinai stressed that this session reflects the Egyptian state’s belief in the importance of participatory action in confronting environmental challenges, as a supportive tool for decision-making and a platform for exchanging visions and experiences, in light of the accelerating environmental challenges the world is witnessing, most notably climate change and its direct impacts on natural resources and quality of life.

The governor explained that South Sinai Governorate has a unique environmental status due to its distinguished natural reserves, rare ecosystems, and coral reefs, which imposes a double responsibility to achieve a balance between the requirements of development and the preservation of these natural resources. He pointed out that the governorate continues to support environmental initiatives in coordination with the Ministry of Environment to implement national strategies concerned with climate and biodiversity.

He stressed that South Sinai is the first Egyptian governorate to complete the preparation of the green strategy for sustainable development, and these efforts have culminated in obtaining a number of international awards and honors that reflect global appreciation for the governorate’s experience in the areas of green transformation, sustainable tourism, and biodiversity preservation.

He pointed out that the governorate pays great attention to supporting the concepts of sustainable development and ecotourism, given that preserving the environment represents a fundamental pillar for the sustainability of the tourism sector, one of the most important pillars of the governorate’s economy. One of the most prominent of these efforts is the “Green Sharm” project, which aims to reduce the carbon footprint and support the use of clean energy.
