On Monday, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced the sudden death of Russia’s ambassador to North Korea, Alexander Matsegora, at the age of 70.

Matsegora has been in office since 2014, and is known for his diplomatic abilities and long experience in Korean affairs, in addition to his proficiency in the Korean language.

The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed in its statement that Matsegora was a driving force behind the tireless work that contributed to bringing Russian-North Korean relations to an unprecedented level, noting his role in training generations of diplomats and specialists in Korean affairs since the beginning of his career in the late 1970s.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un expressed his sincere condolences to Russian President Vladimir Putin, describing the ambassador’s death as a heartbreaking event and a great loss, especially in light of a critical historical stage that bilateral relations between the two countries are going through, according to what was reported by the official North Korean news agency.

North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui praised Matsegura, calling him a dear comrade, a multi-talented veteran diplomat and a close friend of the people of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
