The British ambassador to Iran left the country, accompanied by all the embassy employees, a British official told the American news website Politico. The official explained that the decision was taken based on a security assessment, and out of concern for the safety of the employees.

The report stated that a British government spokesman confirmed: “We have temporarily closed the embassy in Tehran, and it will now work remotely.”

The British Foreign Office also recommended that its citizens avoid all unnecessary trips to Israel, stressing in an official statement that there is an increasing risk of escalating regional tensions, which could lead to travel disruptions and unexpected consequences.

Earlier, the British government announced on Wednesday the temporary closure of its embassy in the Iranian capital, Tehran.
A government official said, in statements reported by the British newspaper The Guardian: “We have temporarily closed the British Embassy in Tehran, and it will now be operated remotely.”

The list of advice provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to travelers has also been updated.”

The unrest in Iran began on December 29 after street protests sparked by a sharp decline in the Iranian rial exchange rate, and spread to most major cities.
