Dr. Khaled Abdel Halim, Governor of Qena, directed the General Administration of Environmental Affairs in the governorate, under the supervision of Engineer Amani Salah, to examine citizens’ complaints about the presence of medical waste in the councilors area in the city. QenaThis came after Cairo reported 24 incidents of medical waste being dumped next to garbage bins in the area.

An environmental campaign to follow up on the safe disposal of medical waste

The Governor of Qena stressed the need for a large committee to move to the site in question to find out the truth of the matter and take the necessary measures, stressing that compromising environmental safety or unsafe disposal of medical waste is something that cannot be tolerated, because of the threat it represents to the public health of citizens.

For her part, Engineer Amani Salah, Director of the General Department of Environmental Affairs in Qena, explained that there was a joint committee, in accordance with the directives of the Qena Governor, which included representatives of the local unit of the Qena Center, the Medical Waste Management of the Health Directorate, the Free Treatment Department, and the Environmental and Bodies of Water Police. It moved directly to the aforementioned site, and through examination and inspection on the ground, it was found that the place was free of any medical waste at the moment of the committee’s arrival, as the waste had been removed in advance before the arrival of the work team.

Amani Salah indicated that the committee carried out a campaign on the medical facilities surrounding the site, which included two medical centers and a specialized clinic, to ensure compliance with safe waste disposal standards.

The Director of the Environmental Affairs Department continued that the campaign resulted in the detection of some deficiencies in the waste management system within some of these facilities, and the necessary legal measures were taken, including issuing urgent warnings, and work is underway to write two reports of environmental violations that were monitored during the inspection.

Engineer Amani Salah added that the committee included the participation of Engineer Ayat Abdel Sabbar, Environmental Affairs at the Qena Center, Obaid Hassan, Department of Hazardous Medical Waste in the Health Directorate, Dr. Muhammad Mudathir, and Dr. Amira Fakhr El-Din, from the Free Therapy Department in the Health Department in Qena, in addition to the presence of representatives of the Environment and Water Bodies Police.

While the Director of the General Administration of Environmental Affairs in Qena stressed the continuation of field follow-up and rapid response to any reports or violations that affect public health and the safety of citizens, in order to preserve the lives of the people and protect them from sources of infection.
