US President Donald Trump said that Iran did not utter the “magic words” to reach an agreement, despite repeated statements from officials.

“We’re negotiating with them,” Trump explained during his State of the Union address. “They want to make a deal, but we haven’t heard those secret words: We will never have a nuclear weapon.”

Trump added that he would prefer to reach an agreement with Iran, but they did not say what American officials want to hear, which is that they will not build a nuclear weapon.

But during a series of negotiations between Tehran and Washington, Iranian officials have repeatedly emphasized that their nuclear program is peaceful, and that they pledge not to build a weapon.

Earlier on Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed this again. “Our fundamental convictions are crystal clear: Iran will not develop a nuclear weapon under any circumstances,” he wrote on X.
