Aya Hassan was surprised, only ten days after giving birth, when she was informed by the nursery team that her child, Aileen Mahmoud, suffers from a congenital heart defect, which is the absence of the pulmonary artery responsible for transporting deoxygenated blood to the lungs to purify it and return it to the heart loaded with oxygen through another artery, which threatens her life and leads to a severe shortage in supplying the body with oxygen and the inability to make any effort.
Given the seriousness of the condition… a mother calls for help to save her little girl, who was born without a pulmonary artery and with holes in her heart.
Aya Hassan told Cairo 24 that one of the doctors had to perform an urgent surgical intervention, which consisted of installing an arterial connection between the heart and the lung using the secondary arteries of the heart, with the aim of reducing the risks resulting from the absence of the pulmonary artery. She stressed that this procedure did not constitute a radical solution to the problem, as the child needed to create a new pulmonary artery and close the holes in the heart.
The mother added that she moved between a number of hospitals in search of an opportunity to save her child, but her attempts failed, as some hospitals refused to perform the surgery due to its seriousness, or due to the lack of available beds and the placement of cases on extended waiting lists.
She explained that she followed her child’s condition at Abu Al-Rish Hospital for a while, before the medical team informed her of the inability to perform the required surgery, adding: I applied to Al-Nas Hospital more than once and was rejected, and I went to the Heart Institute and they said we would not intervene surgically on the case.
She also mentioned that she tried to turn to the Magdy Yacoub Heart Foundation 3 times, but she received the same response every time, which was that there was no place, pointing out that the Egyptian Children’s Hospital rejected the case on their electronic system.
The mother called on health officials and medical authorities concerned with treating children with heart diseases to intervene urgently to perform surgery on her daughter, and to alleviate the health suffering she is suffering from, which is negatively affecting her life.
