
Counselor Issam Farid, President of the Senate, forwarded a statement Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation My request to discuss the government’s policies on the effects of climate change, the mechanisms for managing the High Dam system, and the increasing spread of the water hyacinth plant, to the Agriculture and Irrigation Committee for discussion and preparation of a report on it.
Dr. Hani Sweilem, Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources, confirmed that the country responsible for building the Renaissance Dam caused great damage to Egypt and Sudan, and Ethiopia must demand compensation one day, as the one responsible for the damage is the Ethiopian side.
Modernizing the infrastructure system of the High Dam
Dr. Hani Sweilem, Minister of Water Resources, pointed out that the infrastructure system of the High Dam is updated annually and contracts have been made with the largest companies in the world to follow up on modernizing the system, noting that the Toshka spillway is being expanded through a huge project, as the Toshka spillway is used for emergencies and the recent floods were dealt with professionally.
The minister continued: “I would like to reassure you that the High Dam is updated annually and the system is developed, seeking the help of all Egypt’s experts, and verifying what the engineers of the Ministry of Irrigation are implementing, and there are monitoring devices around every place in the High Dam.” He praised the engineers of the Ministry of Irrigation and the efforts they are making.
The minister continued: “The Toshka spillway must be expanded. With the construction of the Ethiopian dam and unilateral measures, measures had to be taken to enhance the High Dam’s ability to face any challenges. Therefore, the Toshka spillway expansion project came, and work is being done day and night in this area, 24 hours a day, and it is a very important project in increasing reassurance in the face of challenges.”
