The Israeli Broadcasting Corporation announced today, Saturday, that estimates confirm the approaching of a greater escalation in Lebanon, noting that political and security estimates still point to Hezbollah strengthening its presence.
Israel and Lebanon
A ceasefire reached last November between Hezbollah and Israel, after a year of conflict, has calmed the situation, despite continued Israeli attacks in the south and parts of the Bekaa Valley in eastern Lebanon. But Sunday’s attack left many in the country concerned that another intensification could soon occur.
Many villages in the south were destroyed during the fighting, while others suffered severely from Israeli destruction during the ceasefire period. More than 4,000 people have been killed in Lebanon since October 2023, most of them from September to November last year, and more than 1.2 million people have been displaced. Many have not returned to their homes yet, even after a year.
The World Bank estimated that Israel left Lebanon with needs estimated at $11 billion for reconstruction and recovery.
