A video clip posted by Dr. Jayesh Sharma, an Indian oncology surgeon in the city of Raipur, sparked widespread controversy on social media, after he spoke about consumer concerns about wrapping food in paper. AluminumAnd whether this may increase the risk of cancer.

Does wrapping food in aluminum foil cause cancer?

According to what was published by the Hindustan Times newspaper, experts confirmed that aluminum is neither a heavy metal nor classified as a carcinogenic substance, and that the growing concern about it is not scientifically justified.

The Indian doctor pointed out that many people think that heating food or wrapping it in aluminum leads to dangerous amounts of it leaking into the food, but most studies confirm that the amount that may be transferred to the food is very small, and the body absorbs only a little of it that is easily excreted by the kidneys.

He said: We use it daily to prepare lunch and store food, but there are rumors that aluminum leaks toxins into our food. Is this true? Let’s check the facts.

He gave the example of a friend of his who eats fast food every day and complains about wrapping it in aluminum foil, thinking that it is a heavy metal that causes cancer, commenting: The real question is: Why do we use aluminum?

Why is aluminum used?

According to Dr. Sharma, aluminum is widely used for the following reasons:
1. One of the most common minerals on Earth.
2. Light weight and no heavy metals such as lead, mercury, arsenic and cadmium.
3. It does not interact with most foods and enters food in very small quantities, and it does not accumulate in the body.
4. It is not classified as a carcinogen according to international scientific bodies.

He stressed that the average person’s consumption of about 60-80 mg of aluminum per day does not cause any health harm, and that achieving this amount from regular food is almost impossible.

He pointed out that blaming aluminum for causing cancer is like blaming the smoker on the foil in which his cigarette is wrapped, rather than the cigarette itself.

He stressed that the real danger lies in the quality of the food consumed, not in the aluminum foil that covers it, offering advice to consumers: Beware of fast food… not aluminum.
