If you notice blue veins on your legs or feel recurring pain in your… LegsThese may be early indicators of varicose veins, which is a more serious condition than many people think.
Speaking to HT Lifestyle, Dr Avik Bhattacharya, Senior Consultant and Head of the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology at CMRI Hospital, explained that varicose veins are a common condition that indicates poor blood flow and malfunctioning of the veins.
Bhattacharya said that varicose veins appear when the veins, especially in the legs, become enlarged, twisted, and clearly visible under the skin. This occurs due to damage to the venous valves responsible for returning blood to the heart, which leads to blood pooling and swelling of the veins.
It is not just a cosmetic problem
The doctor confirmed that many people believe that varicose veins are only a cosmetic problem, but they may develop to cause annoying symptoms such as:
• Leg pain and ankle swelling.
• Feeling heavy or having night cramps.
• Skin color change.
• Ulcers that may not heal in advanced cases.
Early signs of varicose veins
According to Bhattacharya, varicose veins can be detected in their early stages by:
• Clear blue veins appear.
• Pain or throbbing in the legs, especially after standing for a long time.
• Swollen ankles.
• A feeling of discomfort in the legs.
He noted that symptoms often get worse by the end of the day and improve when the legs are raised.
Effective methods of prevention
The doctor explained that following a healthy lifestyle helps reduce the risk of infection or development of varicose veins, and the most prominent tips are:
• Walk regularly to stimulate blood circulation.
• Maintain a healthy weight.
• Avoid sitting or standing for long periods.
• Raise the legs while resting.
• Wear comfortable, non-tight clothing.
He also recommended using compression stockings, especially for those who work long hours standing, as they help prevent worsening symptoms and support blood flow.
