Sheikh Muhammad Kamal, Secretary of Fatwa at Dar Al-Iftaa, answered a question from one of the followers, saying: I have a bone problem, but he gave me a treatment in a solution and I will suspend it during Ramadan while I am fasting. Does this treatment break the fast or not? He said: “This solution does not affect the validity of fasting,” stressing that many people believe that injections or solutions that enter the body through the vein or muscle invalidate the fast, which is an incorrect belief.

Do solutions and injections during fasting break the fast? The Fatwa Secretary answers

The Fatwa Secretary at Dar Al-Iftaa explained, during television statements, that solutions and injections, whether therapeutic or even for nutrition, do not invalidate fasting, indicating that the entry of these substances into the body does not occur through an open port from which entry invalidates fasting, such as the mouth or nose, stressing that fasting is only invalidated by intentional eating or drinking or the like.

Sheikh Muhammad Kamal stated that scholars have decided that solutions and injections pass under the skin or through a vein, and do not pass through the natural outlets that Sharia has stipulated to consider as invalidating the fast. He explained that the solution, even if it is used for nutrition, does not affect the validity of the fast, and therefore the woman’s fast is valid and there is nothing in it from a legal standpoint.

The Fatwa Secretary pointed out an important condition, which is that the fasting person must be physically capable of fasting, explaining that if the specialist doctor decides that fasting poses a risk to the patient’s health, then the legal duty in this case is to adhere to the doctor’s instructions, and not fast, because preserving oneself is a priority, citing the hadith of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace: “If a servant becomes ill or travels, what he did in a healthy and resident manner will be recorded for him,” stressing that the patient in this case receives the full reward, and spends the days after that if he is able.

He stressed that solutions and injections, including vitamin injections, do not invalidate fasting, whether in obligatory or voluntary fasting, saying: “The solution, in short, does not invalidate fasting, and fasting with it is valid in Ramadan or other than Ramadan, and even vitamin injections are no problem with them, and fasting with them is valid.”
