Ubisoft is betting on a new, strong entry into the MOBA game market, after its acquisition of Amazon Games Montreal and its under-development game March of Giants, a free-to-play “MOBA war” game currently undergoing closed alpha testing on PC.

Under the deal, ownership of the game and the entire development team will transfer to Ubisoft, while Amazon will step back from the direct development role, while continuing its involvement in the marketing side through the Twitch platform.

Although the financial details were not revealed, the importance of the deal is highlighted in the names it returns to Ubisoft. The March of Giants project is being led by Xavier Marquis, the original creative director of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, and veteran producer Alexandre Parizeau, former CEO of Ubisoft Toronto, and the two are returning to the company with the Montreal team to continue developing the project.

March of Giants was announced earlier this year as the first MOBA game developed internally by Amazon, offering a 4v4 combat experience within traditional gameplay paths, within a world inspired by the atmosphere of World War I with a steampunk theme.

Players control huge giants along with armies powered by artificial intelligence, within highly military-style maps.

Although the early alpha tests received limited attention, they showed new ideas and innovative touches on this type of game, according to what Ubisoft and Amazon indicate.
