The US government will ban downloads of TikTok and WeChat, two Chinese-owned apps that have become the subject of national security concerns, effective September 20.

App stores, such as Apple and Google, will not be allowed to publish both apps, and financial transactions in WeChat will be banned in the United States, according to a statement from Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross.

TikTok, which has been negotiating a restructuring with Oracle to ease its ties with China, will have until November 12 to complete a deal or cut it off from US cloud hosting providers and shut down in the country completely.

“At the President’s direction, we have taken significant action to combat China’s malicious collection of American citizens’ personal data, while promoting our national values, democratic rules-based norms, and vigorous enforcement of U.S. laws and regulations,” Ross said in a statement.
