Qualcomm CEO, Cristiano Amon, indicated that the company had entered into talks with Samsung to manufacture its chips with a precision of 2 nanometers, although Samsung later refrained from officially commenting on these statements.
However, this development is remarkable, especially in light of the challenges that Samsung’s foundry business has faced in the recent period.
The last time Samsung manufactured chipsets designed by Qualcomm dates back to 2022, when it launched the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, which then faced widespread criticism due to issues related to heat and performance.
In addition, Samsung’s foundries did not meet Qualcomm’s requirements in terms of proper production ratios, which later prompted the American company to rely on TSMC.
Recently, Qualcomm reopened the door to cooperation, as it itself began talks with Samsung to take over the task of manufacturing 2nm chips. According to informed sources, Qualcomm has already finished designing the chip, and is ready to move to the production stage if a final agreement is reached.
Although matters have not been resolved yet, the data indicate serious attempts by Samsung to rearrange its cards. The head of the company’s chipset sector was entrusted with the major challenge of returning Samsung’s foundries to the path of profitability, the features of which have begun to appear through new supply agreements that have improved future prospects.
In this context, Tesla recently concluded a deal with Samsung to produce advanced chips dedicated to artificial intelligence applications.
The question remains open as to whether Samsung will specifically manufacture the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 processor, or whether the potential partnership between the two parties will move towards different products.
