New icons for Microsoft applications
Microsoft, the American software giant, announced on Friday that it will introduce new colorful icons for its existing applications to give the Windows 10 operating system a more optimistic and refreshing look. As an online report noted, apps including Calculator, Groove Music, Mail, Voice Recorder, Clock, Movie & TV Show, and Calendar will get new designs soon.
More than hundreds of existing apps will soon get an updated look, and the redesigned app icons are currently available to Fast Ring testers for Windows 10 and will be rolled out soon to all devices.
The latest development comes days after the company announced several updates at the upcoming Microsoft 365 Developer Day for Windows 10X event. During the event, he also mentioned that the Windows 10 start menu will be an icon-based launcher, closer to the Android ecosystem.
As noted, the new designs launched by Microsoft are part of the company’s Fluent Design efforts that aim to modernize the look and feel of its programs and services. The redesigned icons aim to give the Windows 10 operating system a more consistent look, compared to the variety of designs found in the ecosystem.
Speaking more about this, Microsoft’s Windows and hardware design lead, Christina Cohen, revealed that the revamped icons are designed to feel familiar and look similar, all the while “honoring” the company’s legacy. Many of the redesigned icons still carry the traditional shade of Microsoft blue.
Christina Cohen said that visual cues in the icon design language using the Fluent Design design language are our trend at the moment, and it is still unclear when we will see these updates on Windows 10, but all the changes will be shown in Windows 10X, which will be launched later this year.
In 2018, Microsoft had launched redesigned icons for all Office 365 apps on both desktops and smartphones. The last time the company updated its icons for Office 365 apps was in 2013. And last year.
