Facebook officially announced the availability of the Messenger Kids messaging app in more than 70 new countries, after it was only available in the United States, Canada, and Peru.
Making the application available in new countries aims to help more children who are staying at home due to the outbreak of the Corona virus, and who now need more communication with their peers through a dedicated application.
But what is the Messenger Kids application, how does it differ from the main application, and what are the differences between it and other communication applications?
Here’s everything you need to know about the Messenger Kids messaging app for kids:
The app was first unveiled in 2017, and is a free video chat and messaging app designed specifically for children. Children under the age of 13 can install the app on their smart phones or tablets, and parents can monitor their activities via their Messenger accounts.
The application comes with many features aimed specifically at children, such as: stickers, GIFs, emojis, and drawing tools, while video chats feature filters, interactions, and sound effects that attract young children. The app allows parents to set up and manage children’s contact lists on their own devices, and there are no purchases or ads within the Messenger Kids app.
What are the new updates in Messenger Kids:
Recent updates added by Facebook include allowing parents to leave some responsibility to children in using the app by allowing them to control their friend requests, instead of having to manage each request on their behalf.
However, parents will continue to receive notifications about their children’s new friends via Messenger and the ability to bypass these requests.
Plus a feature that allows approved adults — such as teachers, coaches, and parents — to manage a group chat that includes their children and friends in class or while they’re out of school. Parents can also control their children’s names and profile photos to be visible to friends of friends in the US, Canada, and Latin America.
How to install and use the Messenger Kids app:
All parents have to do to allow their children to use the app is install the app on their smartphone or tablet, then use the parent’s Facebook login information to authenticate a Messenger Kids account in the child’s name.
Parents will then be able to manage and customize the child’s account through the parental control dashboard in their Facebook app, but creating a Messenger Kids account does not mean the child will have a Facebook account, and the Messenger Kids account will not automatically be upgraded to a regular Messenger account when the child turns 13.
