China’s Ministry of Commerce announced Monday in response to the US Supreme Court’s decision on the tariffs that Beijing will “firmly defend Chinese interests.”

US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that global customs duties would be raised from 10% to 15%.

This came via a tweet on the “Truth Social” platform, where he described the Supreme Court’s decision to cancel customs duties as “ridiculous and disappointing,” stressing that after a comprehensive review of the decision, he decided to raise the duties to the permissible legal limit. He added that this step aims to confront some countries’ exploitation of the United States and to strengthen the strength of the American economy.

On Friday, the US Supreme Court canceled the comprehensive customs duties imposed by Trump, in a ruling supported by 6 judges to 3 against, stressing that the Constitution grants Congress alone the authority to impose taxes and customs duties.

Despite the criticism, Trump stressed that the tariffs represent a “national security” issue, and that he has alternative options to continue his economic policy to strengthen the United States’ global standing.
