Lieutenant General Engineer Kamel Al-Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, held a meeting with Thomas Schaefer, CEO of the German Volkswagen Auto Group, to discuss the group’s plan to manufacture cars in Egypt during the next stage.

The meeting was attended by a delegation from a group Volkswagen It is headed by Ms. Martina Bini, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Managing Director of Volkswagen Group Africa, Engineer Karim Sami Saad, President of the Egyptian German Automotive Company “EGA,” and Dr. Nahid Youssef, President of the General Authority for Industrial Development, along with a number of leaders of the Ministry of Industry and representatives of the Automotive Industry Unit.

The meeting reviewed the Volkswagen Group’s vision for expansion in the Egyptian market through a multi-stage industrial plan that begins with third-party manufacturing at the Egyptian German Automotive Company (EGA) factory, leading to the establishment of an integrated car factory within the industrial zone in East Port Said.

Volkswagen’s proposed road map was also highlighted with regard to localizing the manufacturing of automobile components, improving and raising the capabilities of local suppliers, establishing a research and development center focusing on localizing technology and transferring knowledge to Egyptian cadres, and establishing a technical training center to qualify cadres working in the field of maintenance and repair of electric cars.

The Minister welcomed cooperation with the Volkswagen Group in this important industrial project, stressing that the Egyptian state is committed to providing a stable and stimulating investment environment for foreign investments and that the state is fully prepared to provide all means of support and overcome any challenges that the group may face in order to establish its project in Egypt, in a way that enhances the competitiveness of the industrial sector, raises local manufacturing capabilities, and consolidates Egypt’s position as a regional industrial and logistics center.

The Minister pointed out the need for the Volkswagen Group to benefit from the advantages currently available in the Egyptian market as a gateway to the continent of Africa, based on linking local and regional supply chains, including global component suppliers, to the group’s global supply chain system, as well as benefiting from the many advantages offered by the National Automotive Industry Development Program (AIDP).
