Major General Khaled Shuaib, Governor of Matrouh, this morning, Monday, lit the flame of the governorate’s National Day, marking the start of Matrouh celebrations commemorating the victory of the people of Matrouh over the English campaign in 1915, in the presence of the executive, security and popular leadership, and a number of sheikhs, tribal elders and people of the governorate.
The events witnessed a display of horses in a scene that reflects the authenticity and longevity of the Bedouin heritage that characterizes Matrouh Governorate, amid wide participation of young people and popular bands who presented artistic and folkloric performances that impressed the audience.
Military music also played some patriotic songs, and a number of sports activities, folklore, and songs from school students were presented.
During his speech, the Governor of Matrouh stressed that National Day represents a precious national occasion that embodies the spirit of struggle and sacrifice made by the people of Matrouh in defense of their land and dignity.
The governor added that this year’s celebrations come as an affirmation of the cultural and heritage identity of the people of Matrouh, and the state’s keenness to highlight popular heritage as an integral part of the Egyptian character, pointing out the continued implementation of many service and development projects aimed at improving the quality of life for citizens.
