Health authorities are working American To strengthen its position to maintain the status of the United States as a country that has eliminated measles, in light of the noticeable increase in the number of infections during the recent period, especially with the continued sporadic outbreaks in several states, according to Reuters.

The United States seeks to maintain its status as a measles-free country despite the rise in infections

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that weekly measles cases rose five-fold, with the outbreak continuing in Texas last year and new cases emerging in states such as South Carolina, Utah and Arizona.

Health authorities are seeking to prove that the current outbreaks are not linked to the Texas outbreak, which is a prerequisite for maintaining “measles elimination” status according to World Health Organization standards.

The organization requires that no local transmission of the same strain of the virus be recorded for a period of 12 continuous months in order for the country to be recognized as free of the disease. In this context, the CDC relies on genetic analysis of the virus, along with traditional epidemiological investigations, to determine whether cases are linked to each other.

Experts pointed out that tracking chains of infection faces difficulties due to lack of data or incomplete reporting of some cases, especially in communities that suffer from weak confidence in the health system. However, preliminary genetic analyzes have shown that some outbreaks, such as those that occurred in Utah, are genetically different from the Texas outbreak, which suggests that there is no direct link between them.

This year, the Pan American Health Organization is scheduled to evaluate measles data in the United States, which includes more than 2,000 confirmed cases, to determine whether the country will maintain the health status it has had since 2000, or lose it, as happened with Canada recently.
