The sources did not provide additional information about the content of the call, according to the agency.

Demonstrations and unrest in Iran

On December 28, merchants in the large market in the Iranian capital, Tehran, began protests against the sharp decline in the value of the Iranian riyal against foreign currencies and the worsening economic problems, and the protests later extended to many cities.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian acknowledged the state of popular discontent, stressing that the government was responsible for the current economic problems, and urging officials not to blame external parties such as the United States.

The Iranian authorities did not issue official data regarding the numbers of dead or wounded, but the Iranian Human Rights Activists News Agency (Hrana) reported in a report published on Tuesday, on the sixteenth day of the protests, that 664 people had been killed, including 133 security personnel and a public prosecutor, in addition to 9 people under the age of 18. It also indicated the arrest of 10,721 people.

With the escalation of violence and increased police intervention during the protests, internet service was cut off nationwide on January 9.
