The German government announced today, Monday, the postponement of the visit that Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa was scheduled to make to the capital, Berlin, in light of the internal political developments in Syria.

The German news agency DPA quoted a government spokesman as saying that the decision to postpone was based on an assessment of the current conditions inside Syria, without setting a new date for the visit at the present time.

During the visit, Al-Sharaa was expected to meet German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, along with a number of federal ministers, in addition to holding meetings with representatives of the economic sector and German businessmen.

According to informed sources, the talks were supposed to address sensitive issues, most notably the future of Syrian refugees in Germany, the prospects for rebuilding Syria, in addition to ways to enhance political and economic cooperation between the two countries.

Meretz had sent an official invitation to the Syrian President last November, stressing at the time that the end of the civil war in Syria opened the door to discussing the issue of the return of refugees, considering that the reasons for seeking asylum in Germany no longer existed.

The decision to postpone comes one day after the Syrian President signed an agreement with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), stipulating a comprehensive ceasefire and their full integration into the institutions of the Syrian state, especially the army and security services, and the extension of state sovereignty over the regions of the north and east of the country. This agreement was widely welcomed by Arab and international audiences.

In this context, Al-Sharaa indicated that a meeting scheduled for Sunday with SDF leader Mazloum Abdi was postponed to the next day due to bad weather conditions.
