The disappearance of a large amount of… Poppy A mysterious discovery of a legal, controlled farm used to produce pharmaceuticals in the Australian state of Tasmania has sparked controversy and raised concerns about the accession of these substances into general circulation on Australian territory and the serious consequences that this could entail.
The mysterious disappearance of large quantities of poppies in Australia
According to what was published by the British newspaper Daily Mail, Tasmania Police reported that the theft occurred in a controlled cropland located between the areas of Tonbridge and Campbelltown in the North Midlands region, and it is believed that one or several vehicles were parked next to the fields between Friday and Monday, which is the period during which the theft is likely to have occurred, and police indicated that the vehicle could be clearly seen from the Midland Highway.
The police confirmed their special interest in hearing testimonies from anyone who saw a black Volkswagen Golf parked on the side of the highway near the poppy fields, or from motorists who passed through the area during that period and were using dashboard cameras.
Poppy plants are poisonous
For its part, the Ministry of Health issued a warning on Wednesday afternoon, stressing that poppy plants are toxic, and that eating them may pose a direct threat to life, calling for any potential exposure to be treated as an emergency.
The poppy plant has been linked to a number of deaths in Tasmania, including the death of a Danish tourist in 2014 after drinking tea made from this plant. In late 2022, the state of New South Wales witnessed at least eight people hospitalized as a result of symptoms of poisoning after consuming large quantities of poppy seeds, with similar cases recorded in other states.
Poppy flowers have been grown in Tasmania for decades under strict regulations, as they can be refined to produce powerful narcotic drugs such as morphine and codeine, which are used by multinational pharmaceutical companies. In contrast, illegal producers rely on poppies to manufacture heroin.
The authorities warned that consuming these substances in unsafe ways could lead to convulsions, suffocation, and even death.
Poppy seeds are widely used as a popular ingredient in cakes and bread. The natural chemical present in them is destroyed during the baking process, making them safe for food consumption when used properly.
