On Tuesday, the Dutch Foreign Ministry summoned the Iranian ambassador to the Netherlands to protest the confiscation of a Dutch diplomat’s bags at Tehran airport.

The Dutch Foreign Ministry said in a statement: “Iran caused a diplomatic crisis on January 28, 2026, by forcing a Dutch diplomat to hand over his diplomatic bags at Tehran Airport. This is unacceptable,” according to what Reuters news agency reported.

The ministry added that it had repeatedly called on Iran to immediately release the confiscated bags, without providing further details. It explained that it had summoned the ambassador after Iran published a video of the incident on the Internet.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said that reaching a nuclear agreement with the United States is possible if diplomacy is prioritized, state media reported, ahead of the resumption of talks in Geneva later this week.

Araqchi wrote on the “X” website that there is a “historic opportunity” to address common concerns and interests, but stressed that Tehran will adhere to its red lines, including its right to possess peaceful nuclear technology and rule out developing any nuclear weapon.

These statements come at a time when officials from both sides are preparing to resume negotiations, as the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister stated that Tehran is ready to take the necessary steps to reach an agreement.
