This came during the organization of the Library of Alexandria, in cooperation with the Consulate General of Greece in Alexandria, a celebration on the occasion of International Greek Language Day.
He added that the Library of Alexandria is interested in studying Mediterranean civilization and Hellenistic culture through its research centers, and today we are embarking on a journey of one of the oldest and most influential living languages in human history. He added: We at the Library of Alexandria affirm that the Greek language will remain a symbol of enlightenment and knowledge, and we are also proud of the ongoing cultural cooperation with Greece.
For his part, Ioannis Bergakis confirmed; Consul General of the State of Greece in Alexandria. The city of Alexandria is closely linked to the historical journey of the Greek language since the Hellenistic era. It witnessed the translation of Greek writings, and the writings of the most important scholars and researchers emerged. The city of Alexandria also witnessed the first forms of interaction between the Greek, Coptic, and then Arabic languages.
He pointed out that World Greek Language Day is celebrated on February 9 in memory of the national poet Dionysios Solomos and in appreciation of the contributions and influence of the Greek language throughout the ages.
He pointed out that the language is a powerful tool for diplomacy and expresses memory and identity, stressing that the Greek language has always been a bridge between the past and the present, cultures and civilizations.
In his speech, Pope Theodorus II said: The Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa: Organizing this event at the Library of Alexandria gives this occasion a special splendor and constitutes a living testimony to the respect and appreciation Egypt has for Greek civilization and the ancient Greek presence over the centuries on the land of the Nile.
He stressed that the Greek language is not just a system of words, but rather a carrier of memory and identity. It is the language of philosophy, science, poetry, and the Bible. He pointed out that in Alexandria, the Greek language acquired a global dimension. In its library, knowledge flourished and in its schools, generations of scholars were raised. He added that in our world today, which faces many tensions, the Greek language calls on us to bear responsibility, serve the truth, and promote dialogue and peace-building.
