A young Spanish woman named Noelia Castillo, 25 years old, is preparing to end her life today, Thursday, through euthanasia, after a long legal struggle waged by her father to prevent this tragic procedure. The details of the tragedy go back to the girl being subjected to a horrific gang rape that prompted her to attempt suicide by jumping from the roof of a building, which left her with paralysis and chronic, unbearable pain. The authorities finally agreed to her request to end her suffering inside a care facility in the city of Barcelona.

Details of suffering and the decision to end one’s life

According to the Daily Mail, the young woman lived a harsh childhood in foster homes due to her parents’ addiction and psychological problems, but the tragic turning point occurred in 2022 when she was sexually assaulted by her ex-boyfriend and three other men. A few days after the crime, which she did not report, she jumped from the fifth floor under the influence of drugs, sustaining a severe spinal cord injury that left her unable to move from the waist down.

According to the Daily Mail, the victim stated that she wants to get rid of the constant pain, as she suffers from extreme difficulty sleeping and excruciating pain in the back and legs, stressing that the happiness of her family cannot be more important than her personal comfort and her right to euthanize to end this physical and psychological torment.

The legal battle and the family’s situation

The girl’s father, supported by a group of far-right Christian lawyers, as the newspaper described them, tried to stop the medical procedure, justifying this by saying that his daughter suffers from mental disorders that affect her ability to make a free and informed decision as required by local law. However, the courts at all levels, up to the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court, rejected all appeals, and the European Court of Human Rights also rejected a final attempt to stop the implementation this week. The young woman accused her father of not respecting her wishes, indicating that he seeks to keep her alive only for financial reasons, and that he abandoned her. Emotionally, he no longer communicates with her except by bringing food, confirming that she invited her family to bid her farewell, but she prefers to remain alone at the moment of receiving the euthanasia injection.

The last moments and repercussions of the case

In a recent television interview, the young woman revealed her simple wish in her closing moments, as she asked to wear her most beautiful dresses and apply makeup to look her best before she left this world full of pain.

It is worth noting that Spain is considered one of the few countries that legalizes this medical procedure with strict conditions for incurable cases that cause permanent disability. However, the legal controversy will not end with Noelia’s death, as the Christian legal group continues to file accusations of professional misconduct against doctors and members of the Catalan Evaluation Committee, while the European Court is expected to issue a later ruling regarding possible violations of human rights in this thorny case.
