Mette Frederiksen, Prime Minister of Denmark, responded to the statements US President Donald Trump Regarding the possibility of the United States annexing the island of Greenland, she stressed that talking about annexing any of the territories of the Danish Kingdom is meaningless, she said.

Trump’s statements about controlling the island of Greenland

Frederiksen said, in a post on her official Facebook page: I must be very frank with the United States. There is no justification for talking about the need for the United States to control Greenland. The United States has no right to annex any of the three countries belonging to the Danish Kingdom.

The Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Denmark added, saying: The Danish Kingdom, including Greenland, is a member of NATO… and this includes the security guarantee provided by the alliance… and we already have a defense agreement with the United States that gives it a limited presence in Greenland, and we have invested heavily in the security of the Arctic.

She concluded her message by saying: I call on the United States to stop making threats against a historic ally and against another people who are clearly not for sale.

Trump had stated, during telephone statements with the American newspaper The Atlantic, that the United States needed to control strategic areas, including Greenland, which belongs to Denmark, justifying this by saying that the island is surrounded by Russian and Chinese ships.
