Public prosecutors in Munich announced the detention of five men on charges of planning an attack on a Christmas market in southern Germany, according to the German News Agency.
The Public Prosecution said in a statement today that official arrest warrants were issued against four of the men, while a fifth man was placed in preventive detention on suspicion of planning to attack a Christmas market in the Dingolfing region in southern Bavaria.
The prosecution currently suspects an Islamist motive behind the attack, and it was possible that it was carried out using a vehicle. The Public Prosecution Office confirmed, on Saturday evening, the principle of the presumption of innocence.
Germany rejects Washington’s criticism of freedom of expression
In a related context, German Foreign Minister Johan Vadevol expressed his strong rejection of what was stated in the new US National Security Strategy, which presented a negative assessment of the reality of freedom of expression and democracy in Europe.
“No one needs to advise us” about freedom of expression, Vadevol said, considering that this principle is “firmly guaranteed” in the German constitutional system.
