The Iranian Revolutionary Guard is on the list of terrorist organizations
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said in a blog post on his X account: France will support the inclusion of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on the European Union’s list of terrorist organizations.
Reuters reported that, earlier on Wednesday, France was reluctant to support the majority in the bloc, who pushed to add the Iranian Revolutionary Guard to the European Union’s list of terrorist organizations, joining the United States.
In the same context, a source at the Elysee Palace reported to the American website Axios that France has officially changed its position and now supports the inclusion of the Revolutionary Guard on the European list, which paves the way for the implementation of this step in the coming days, if the required consensus is achieved within the Union.
With France, Italy and Germany now on board, the decision is likely to be approved politically on Thursday, although it needs consensus among the bloc’s 27 members.
In this context, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced on Monday that he would officially call for the inclusion of the Revolutionary Guard on the European terrorist list, indicating a clear shift in Rome’s position and its joining the camp supporting the designation.
These moves come amid intense international pressure and accusations from human rights organizations that the Revolutionary Guards are behind the violent suppression campaigns of the recent protests that the country has witnessed.
