A telephone call took place between Dr. Badr Abdel Aty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration, and Egyptian Abroad Affairs, and Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, on Friday, December 5.
The call discussed bilateral cooperation between Egypt and the Agency in the field of peaceful uses of atomic energy in support of national development efforts, especially the Dabaa nuclear power plant project, which is a model of cooperation and coordination between Egypt and the Agency.
During the call, Minister Abdel Aty also expressed Egypt’s full support for the important role played by the International Atomic Energy Agency within the framework of the verification system under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and its statute, stressing that Egypt attaches great importance to preserving the principle of the universality of the Treaty, preventing nuclear proliferation, and the credibility of the Treaty as a basic pillar of the nuclear non-proliferation system, expressing aspiration to continue coordination and cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
The call also dealt with the Iranian nuclear file, as Minister Abdel Ati stressed the importance of continuing efforts aimed at reducing escalation, building confidence, and creating the necessary conditions for the continuation of existing cooperation, which provides a real opportunity for diplomatic solutions and the resumption of dialogue with the aim of reaching a comprehensive agreement on the Iranian nuclear file that takes into account the interests of all parties, and contributes to achieving regional security and stability.
