Today, Sherif Fathi, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, received Dr. Lina Mendoni, Minister of Culture of the Republic of Greece, and her accompanying delegation, at the headquarters of the Grand Egyptian Museum, as part of her current official visit to Egypt, in the presence of the Greek Ambassador to Cairo and a number of leaders from both sides. The meeting discussed ways to enhance joint cooperation in the field of antiquities and the preservation and protection of cultural heritage.
Egypt and Greece strengthen their archaeological partnership from the heart of the Grand Egyptian Museum
The meeting witnessed extensive discussions on supporting the bilateral partnership between the two countries in the fields of archaeological excavations and exchanging artistic and scientific expertise, in a way that enhances efforts to preserve cultural heritage and keep pace with modern developments in the management and preservation of archaeological sites and museums.
At the beginning of the meeting, the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities welcomed his Greek counterpart, praising the depth of the historical relations between Egypt and Greece, which represent an essential foundation for enhancing joint cooperation, especially in the field of antiquities and heritage, pointing out the importance of continuing coordination between the two sides in a way that contributes to protecting human heritage and enhancing the benefit of mutual experiences.
The two sides discussed the proposal to form a joint working group between the Supreme Council of Antiquities and its Greek counterpart, with the aim of cooperating in the fields of archaeological excavations, exchanging experiences, and benefiting from the pioneering Egyptian experience in establishing and managing museums, most notably the Grand Egyptian Museum, in a way that supports the development of museum institutions in Greece.
The meeting also discussed ways to enhance cooperation in combating illicit trafficking in cultural property, and joint coordination to recover antiquities that exited the two countries illegally, in addition to following up on the implementation of the recommendations issued by the Athens Declaration of the Forum of Ancient Civilizations.
Following the meeting, the Greek Minister of Culture undertook an inspection tour inside the Grand Egyptian Museum, which included the great staircase, the main halls, and the halls of King Tutankhamun, where she expressed her admiration for the architectural and museum development the museum witnessed that reflects Egypt’s cultural status.
The Minister of Tourism and Antiquities also accompanied the Minister and her accompanying delegation on a visit to the Giza Pyramids area, within the framework of introducing her to the most prominent Egyptian archaeological and tourist attractions, in a way that enhances the prospects for cultural and tourism cooperation between the two countries, and emphasizes the depth of the cultural ties that bring together Egypt and Greece.
