Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of the Environment, met with representatives of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to discuss areas of joint cooperation in implementing sustainable environmental and social projects in the Egyptian governorates.
Egypt and FAO collaborate on environmental and social projects to promote sustainability and adaptation to climate change
The meeting was attended by Dr. Abdul Hakim Al-Waer, Assistant Director-General of FAO, Dr. Jacqueline Benat, Acting Representative of the Organization in Egypt, and Dr. Mohamed Yaqoub, Assistant Representative of the Organization for Program Affairs, in addition to the leaders of the Ministry of Environment and the Environmental Projects Management Board.
Dr. confirmed. Manal Awad: The importance of cooperation with FAO in enhancing the governorates’ ability to adapt to the effects of climate change and improving the livelihoods of local communities. Expanding the production of organic fertilizer from biogas units was also discussed to enhance the competitiveness of agricultural exports in accordance with European standards.
It was also agreed to prepare a joint study to confront the spread of stray dogs in order to achieve environmental balance and social security, strengthen the national climate change strategy, encourage climate-smart agriculture, and adopt solar energy solutions in irrigation, agricultural activities and food production chains.
For his part, Dr. Abdel Hakim Al-Waer stressed FAO’s keenness to enhance livelihoods in Egyptian rural communities and support Egypt’s efforts in leading regional environmental projects, praising the historical partnership between the organization and Egypt in the fields of food security and sustainable development.
