The Library of Alexandria, under the generous patronage of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Republic, announced the results of the Alexandria Library International Prize 2025 in its first session after it was approved by the jury and the award’s Supreme Committee. Dr. Ahmed Abdullah Zayed announced: Director of the Library of Alexandria: Professor Dr. Hassan Shafiq Abdullah (British of Egyptian origin) and Mr. Glenn Panagoas (Philippines) won equally the prize, which has a financial value of one million Egyptian pounds, in addition to a gold medal, with an official certificate of appreciation.

The award is awarded in one field determined by the Supreme Committee of the Award each year, and the field of the first session was entitled “Applications of green technology to achieve well-being and happiness for humanity.”

Professor Dr. Ahmed Abdullah Zayed said that His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s patronage of the Alexandria Library International Award gives it more importance and appreciation at the local and international levels, noting that this reflects His Excellency’s interest in the Alexandria Library achieving its lofty mission and continuing its enlightenment message, and in a way that contributes to supporting creativity and innovation, especially in topics that achieve well-being and happiness for humanity.

The winners will be celebrated in a major cultural celebration, which is being prepared to produce an image befitting the first international award bearing the name of the Library of Alexandria after its revival and opening in 2002 AD.

Among the reasons for granting the award to Professor Dr. Hassan Shafiq Abdullah is that it represents appreciation for his prominent global contributions in the field of green technology, circular economy and sustainable innovation to enhance human well-being and happiness, in addition to his distinguished career that combines leadership and development on the ground and a continuous commitment to sustainability.

Dr. Hassan Shafiq has developed smart, sustainable cities that enhance urban resilience, created low-carbon transportation solutions, and established smart, sustainable universities that instill environmental values ​​in education, while developing green data centers that reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions.

Through his work as Chair of the UK R&D Committee for Circular Economy and Innovation and Vice-Chancellor of the University of East London, he has transformed corporate culture towards green innovation and integrated sustainability technologies into education. Professor Dr Hassan Shafiq has led research on disaster resilience and raised the level of green architecture education. The criteria that were applied also included the extent to which the business outputs were compatible with global trends and sustainable development goals, the amount of time, effort and cost invested in preparing the business, the extent of its reliance on local sources, the quality of the presentation, and respect for the formal criteria for applying for the award, in addition to the size of the qualitative addition of the business in achieving human well-being and happiness.
