Dr. Tamer Madkour, Director of the Directorate of Health Affairs in Cairo, decided to send an urgent technical committee to visit the nurseries department at Dar El Salam General Hospital, to examine complaints received from families regarding the level of medical service and the operation of some nurseries that suffer from technical malfunctions and the appearance of rust, according to sources in the Ministry of Health and Population.

Cairo Health Monitors Violations in Dar El Salam Hospital Nurseries

The sources explained to Cairo 24 that the technical committee, during its passage, made a number of observations related to the capacity and technical condition of the equipment, as it was found that the department’s capacity is 18 incubators, in addition to 3 spare nurseries, while there are 13 occupied nurseries, including one nursery that was full of rust, and the observation was dealt with at the time and the rust was removed.

The sources added that the committee monitored the presence of 8 non-functioning nurseries whose malfunctions were not reported until the date of the passage, which included malfunctions represented by the loudness of the motor during operation in 4 nurseries, a damaged heater in one nursery, and the lack of locks for closing in two nurseries.

It revealed that 4 of the 5 respirators available in the department were broken, with two cases on a respirator, which were treated with a respirator from adult intensive care.

The sources indicated that the committee reviewed patient files and found that they were incomplete, with vital signs not being recorded regularly, in addition to monitoring a lack of full compliance with infection control standards within the department.

On the other hand, the committee explained that periodic maintenance of the electric generator is carried out on a regular basis, and it is working well, and that the nursery section is connected to the generator, while adhering to security, safety and occupational health standards, and the absence of bare cables, in addition to performing regular maintenance on fire extinguishers.

The committee concluded that one of the most prominent observations was the failure to report malfunctions to the administration on a regular basis, which is why it recommended quickly following up on repairing the malfunctions by the hospital administration, and taking the necessary measures to ensure regular, immediate reporting of any future malfunctions, in order to preserve the safety of children and the quality of the medical service provided.

In light of these observations, it was decided to remove the head of the nursery department from his position, with the start of the search for a replacement for the director of Dar es Salaam General Hospital, for not following up on the progress of work in the department and not reporting malfunctions and other negatives monitored by the technical committee, in addition to referring him to legal affairs to take the necessary measures, according to what the sources reported.
